Double amputee Oscar Pistorius can try to qualify for the Beijing Olympics after winning his appeal against a ban at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the South African's lawyer said. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) ruled in January that the runner could not compete with able-bodied athletes because the carbon-fibre blades attached to both legs gave him an advantage. The 21 year-old appealed to the CAS, which ruled in his favour on Friday.

Double amputee Oscar Pistorius failed in his first bid to reach the Olympic 400 metres qualification time at an athletics meeting on Wednesday. The South African, who runs with carbon fibre blades attached below the knee, is entitled to compete against able-bodied runners following a Court of Arbitration for Sport ruling in May. The 21-year-old needed to clock 45.55 to qualify for the individual race at next month's Beijing Games but instead ran 47.78 to finish fourth.

The elegant and understated personal dagger carried by Shah Jahan (reign 1627-1657), with its fine gold inscriptions and decoration dated to 1629-30 AD, was expected to attract bids of around 300,000-500,000 pounds.The dagger was the most important item in a collection built by the late Jacques Desenfans, a Belgian.
